The design and construction of ground floors: Unit 1 Lesson 15

The design and construction of ground floors: Different types of ground floor and their advantages/disadvantages, including: solid suspended beam and block.

Fig 1.3 Typical solid floor details.

Materials used: timber joists solid concrete.

Detailing, including: damp-proof course (dpc) damp-proof membrane (dpm) sand blinding hardcore thermal insulation and the location of insulation sub-floor ventilation.

Teacher/tutor input: explain how ground floors are detailed and describe the design and construction of ground floors, including advantages/disadvantages of each floor type. Learner activity: using AS 9, sketch and label solid floor. Learners should also practise sketching suspended and beam and block ground floors. Labels should include the damp-proof course (dpc), damp-proof membrane (dpm), sand blinding, hardcore, thermal insulation (location of insulation) and sub-floor ventilation like air bricks.
