Should I study MODERN HISTORY?

“WHY STUDY MODERN HISTORY?” We live in times of enormous social, political and economic change. A study of Modern History will not just teach you about the past, it will also help you understand the world you live in.

WHO SHOULD STUDY MODERN HISTORY? This is a challenging subject which involves research, analysis of historical sources and writing essays. Generally, students should have received a minimum of a Band 8 in their NAPLAN Students who are interested in and enthusiastic about History Students who enjoy the challenges of research and problem solving

What will I be studying in Year 11? Part 1: Investigating Modern History - The Nature of Modern History and Case Studies (50% of the course) At least ONE option from ‘The Nature of Modern History’ and at least TWO case studies, with one from List A and List B: e.g. The Investigation of Historic Sites and Sources The Construction of Modern Histories History and Memory The Representation and Commemoration of the Past List A: The Decline and Fall of the Romanov Dynasty The American Civil War Women’s Movements List B: Tibet in the Modern World Making Contact with the Pacific The Cuban Revolution

EXTENSION HISTORY Future Advantages Modern History is a 2 Unit Course. Towards the end of the Year 11 course motivated, interested students may discuss with their History Teacher the option of completing the 1 unit HSC History Extension Course which begins in Term 4 of Year 11. Future Advantages · Many professions and occupations value people who have the ability to develop and express a reasoned opinion. · Students in many university courses (eg. English, Media Studies, Law, History, Journalism, Commerce, Economics) are all greatly aided by a knowledge of History and the skills developed though its study.
