Tech/ME 140: Unit 5 Lecture Mechanism Design: Introduction to Mechanisms, Synthesis Using Graphical Approach. Motion Analysis and Simulation: Animation and Articulation

Mechanism Defined A system of parts working together in a machine. A piece of machinery. An assembly of moving parts performing a complete functional motion, often being part of a large machine. Linkage.

Mechanism Design

Mechanism Design with Labels

Two Ways of Achieving Synthesis of Mechanism Rational Synthesis: Consists of standard synthesis techniques developed by kinematicians. These techniques can be automated using computer programs. Limitation is that it is applicable only to some specific types of mechanisms. Informal Synthesis or Iteration: Involves a guess of dimensions of mechanism members. Then checking the resultant performance by analysis. The dimensions are modified to obtain desired results.

SolidWorks Simulation SolidWorks Simulation provides core simulation tools to test your designs and make the decisions to improve quality. This eliminates the redundant tasks required with traditional analysis tools. Component materials, connections, and relationships defined during design development are fully understood for simulation. Products can be tested for strength and safety.

SolidWorks Motion Analysis SolidWorks motion analysis uses the assembly mates along with part contacts and a robust physics-based solver to accurately determine the physical movements of an assembly under load. With the assembly motion and forces calculated, a structural analysis of the components can be performed to ensure product performance.

SolidWorks Motion Analysis Conduct detailed motion analysis and evaluate the mechanical performance of your design using: CAD-embedded SolidWorks Simulation SolidWorks Motion, and  Finite element analysis (FEA).

SolidWorks Motion Analysis A Motion Analysis study combines motion study elements with mates in motion calculations. Motion constraints, material properties, mass, and component contact are included in the SolidWorks Motion kinematic solver calculations. A Motion Analysis study also calculates loads that can be used to define load cases for structural analyses.

SolidWorks Motion Analysis You can use Motion Analysis to accurately simulate and analyze the motion of an assembly while incorporating the effects of Motion Study elements such as: Forces Springs Dampers Friction

SolidWorks Motion Analysis To use the SolidWorks Motion solver in a motion study, select Motion Analysis from the motion studies type list in the MotionManager
