Life is a highway by Tom Cochrane Song Analysis Life is a highway by Tom Cochrane

Similes A simile is a comparison between two unalike things using the words “like” or “as”, for example in this song there is a lyric “Life’s like a road you travel on” meaning that you cant really decide what happens but you just have to ride it and see what happens.

Metaphor A metaphor is a direct comparison between two unalike things for example in this song they say “Life is a highway” They compare the two but they are both very different from one another. But it makes sense

Alliteration Alliteration is a repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of a series or words. For example in the song they say “gimme gimme gimme” each word makes the same sound at the beginning therefor this is an example of alliteration.

Figurative language Figurative language is when the poem or song you are reading is in such good detail you get an image in your head of what you think is going on. For example in this song they sing “from Mozambique to those Memphis nights, Khyber pass to Vancouver’s lights”. When I hear this I definitely picture Memphis nights and the lights in Vancouver.

Questions What do you think the message in the song was? I think the message in the song was that life can be hard and knock you down at times but you have to be able to pick yourself back up and fight. I think that they were also trying to say that in life you get to choose which paths you go down and sometimes you take the wrong path but its your job to get back on track.

Questions 2. Where do you picture this taking place? I Either picture it taking place on a highway (because that’s what they are talking about in the song, or somewhere in the country because that’s what country song remind me of.) Also in the song they talk about Memphis and Vancouver so possibly there as well.

Questions 3. Do you like the song? Why or why not? I liked the song because I thought it had good beat and rhythm. I also like the song because of it lyrics and how truthful they are. When I hear this song it makes me happy, Also I can relate to the song because there are times when I feel down or sad but I eventually pick myself back up and get back on track.

Questions 4. What is your favourite lyric? Did it make you feel something? My favourite lyrics are “sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand, sometimes you turn your back to the wind, there’s a world outside every darkened door, where blues wont haunt you anymore” these are my favourite lyrics because I can relate to them. Sometimes I think my life sucks but then I open a new door and things get better again. These lyrics are also very realistic.

Questions 5. What do you think the author of the song was going thru when he wrote this song? I think he was just thinking back on his life and telling a story about how you have to just go with the flow of life because even if you make mistakes its okay because you can fix them and move on. I think he was also thinking about how thankful he was for his life.

Article So first when I listened and read the song It was about being in a dark place and getting thru it okay because of the lyrics “there’s a world outside every darkened door, where blues wont haunt you anymore” but after reading again and analysing better it further I think it means more like life is a highway meaning that it’s a long undirected road without any stops. And I believe that the author of this song was implying that he didn’t want it to end and he wanted to “ride it all night long”
