The Pueblo Culture Area Jumano

Geography The Jumano lived in a vast desert area. Except that the Jumano were able to place their villages near the Rio Grande river. All of this would be located in the Mountains and Basins Region.

Government -The Jumano were divided into separate groups: the Pueblos and the Plains. The purpose of a government was to organize the different groups together for trading and celebratory events. Representatives would visit the different tribes to ask for help when needed or to trade goods and services. - The Spanish claimed the Jumano had one leader or elder, called the Cacique

Lifestyle The Jumano were great at making jewelry out of copper, silver, and turquoise. The Jumano also made incredible pottery like the Caddo

Clothing The Jumano wore clothing made from buffalo hides , they were also one of the only groups to wear actual shoes or sandals made from leather

Weapons Jumano used a bow for hunting and a buffalo hide shield for war.

Home - The Jumano’s homes were built out of dried mud clay bricks. Homes were then stacked on top of each other almost like a modern day apartment building. The only difference is that the only way to get to the upper houses was by ladder.

Food They raised corn, beans, squash, and other similar vegetables and gathered pinon nuts, mesquite beans, and prickly-pear cactus. They also ate buffalo, deer and rabbit.

Interesting Facts Unlike the Caddo, the Jumano were destroyed by the Spanish and the newly arrived Apaches. What people were left of the Jumano joined other Pueblo Indians like the Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi.
