How to evaluate a theory

What is a theory? Explanatory framework Leads to hypothesis Two key components: Must describe a behavior Must make predictions about future behavior

How do we evaluate a theory? With TEACUP!

T-Testable Has to be falsifiable If it cannot be tested, not a good theory

E-Empirical Support Has to have evidence to support it Must be from good empirical study Evidence can be replicated

A-Application Can be applied to many different situations Improves a specific behavior (ex: alleviates depression)

C-Clearly defined variables Variables should be clearly defined Reliably measured

U-Unbiased Should not show gender or culture bias NOT androcentric or ethnocentric

P-Predicts behavior Does not just describe, predicts! Should not simply label

Testable Empirical support Application Clearly defined variables Unbiased Predicts behavior

Activity: Freudian Theories Break into groups of two to three. Choose a theory and summarize the theory for the class. The trauma of birth The personality triad of id, ego, superego Defense mechanism: Projection The Oedipal conflict Freudian slips (parapraxis) Thanatos Anal retention Wish fulfillment (dreams) Each group should use the "teacup" model to evaluate the theory that they have been given. Using at least three of the criteria for a good theory, how does Freudian theory hold up?
