Mill Run Elementary School K-2 Autism Program 2016-2017 Mill Run Elementary School

Meet the Teachers Ms. Alexis This is my 1st year teaching at Mill Run and my 1st year as a lead classroom teacher. I spent two years at Cedar Lane as an assistant in their autism classroom. I am concurrently working towards my Masters in Education – Special Education at Shenandoah University. I studied Psychology and Childhood Studies at Christopher Newport University. My family (Mom, Dad, and brother – Ian) and I have lived in Virginia since 2004. I started at Simpson Middle School in my 8th grade and graduated in 2009 from Loudoun County High School. In between school and school , I love to be outside or at the gym. Mrs. Fisher This is my 4th year at Mill Run. My first two years were spent as a teacher assistant in Special Education (Cross Categorical), and a Substitute classroom teacher in all grades. Last year I was a teacher assistant in kindergarten. I have lived in Broadlands for 10 years, with my husband, Bill, my son Zach, and my dog CJ. Zach will be in 5th grade this year at Mill Run and has enjoyed being at this school since kindergarten! After school, I can be found carting Zach to a soccer field somewhere in Loudoun County or around the neighborhood walking CJ. Be sure to wave “hello” if you see us!

Daily Schedule ??????????? Our schedule will vary for each student as we consider the needs of the IEP. Time in general education, related service providers, independent work, and group work are considered when crafting individual student schedules. I will send home a copy of your child's schedule the first week of school!

Ms. Alexis’ Favorite Things About K-2 Learning to love school! Kinesthetic lessons and activities Routines, procedures, and structure! Creating a Language-Rich Environment Smiles and hugs!

We are a NUT FREE classroom. Snack and Lunch We are a NUT FREE classroom. Mealtimes are an important and valuable activity throughout the school day. During breakfast, lunch and snack we practice: Self-help skills such as being responsible for our items, learning to use utensils, opening packages. Personal-Social skills Communication

Snack and Lunch Breakfast: All of our students vary regarding the amount of time spent on the bus. This can mean an early breakfast or no breakfast at all. We will have an allotted breakfast time at 8:00 AM. You may send breakfast/breakfast snack (nutrigrain bar, dried cereal) or purchase breakfast from the cafeteria. The cost of breakfast per day is $2.10. The menu can be found online at lcps.org Lunch: We will eat lunch in the cafeteria each day beginning at 10:50. You may send your child’s lunch from home or it can be purchased from the cafeteria. The cost of lunch per day is $3.00. The menu can be found online at lcps.org Snack: We will have snack each day around 1:15 PM. Please send a daily snack for your child. You may send daily or in bulk for the week. An example of a snack is goldfish crackers, fruit, and water. Please label it with “snack” if you are sending their lunch as well.

Home-School Communication Daily Communication Notebooks We will send home a notebook with your child each day. Your child fills out their "My Day" form to review activities and daily behavior. Please review and sign daily. Include any information that may be helpful (ex: "Johnny didn't sleep last night" or "We've changed medication") Phone Calls and Email My computer is open during the day and I will check and check emails when I can. This is the best way to reach me. I understand the ease of a quick text in the event of an emergency, but I will be unable to attend to any calls until after 2:30 PM. You can also call the office at (571) 252-2160. You can email me at Alexis.Pham@lcps.org I will most likely follow up emails with a phone call.

IEPs, FBAs, & BIPs…?????????? IEP’s are held annually. The IEP is your child’s Individualized Education Program. The team (including parents!) will discuss present levels, goals, accommodations, testing, placement, and services. An IEP can be held at anytime, but MUST be held each year. FBA- Functional Behavior Assessment. FBA’s are held annually for ALL students in the self-contained autism program. This is a chance for the team to look at any concerning behavior and determine the function- WHY is your child engaging in this behavior? BIP-Behavior Intervention Plan. A BIP meeting is held annually OR as needed. A review of the BIP is held quarterly. The BIP is the plan for replacing the inappropriate behavior with an appropriate behavior that serves the same function. Eligibility meetings vs. Re-evaluation meetings

Evaluation, eligibility, & re-evaluation…??? Evaluation occurs when a child is suspected of having a disability. The school will then evaluate the child to determine whether he has a disability and the nature and extent of the special education and related services that he needs. Eligibility is based on the results of evaluation, a team will determine whether a child is eligible to receive special education and related services . To be found eligible, the team must decide that the child has a disability and as a result needs special education and related services. Re-evaluation occurs at least every 3 years to determine whether a child still needs special education and related services.
