Route Search 1/2 S Track of missing aircraft Track of search aircraft Used when aircraft missing without a trace - also used at night. Rapid and reasonably thorough coverage near the expected track.

Route Search: Details Normally used when an aircraft has disappeared without a trace but where likely course is known Assumes that the missing aircraft has crashed or made a forced landing on or near its intended track (route). Assumes that detection may be aided by survivor signals or by electronic means. Flown in a rapid and reasonably thorough coverage on either side of the missing aircraft's intended track. Search altitude from 1000 feet above ground level (AGL) to 2000 feet AGL for day searches.

Parallel Track Used for large and fairly level search areas. Grid search uses this pattern. Can be done East/West or North/South.

Parallel Track: Details The parallel track (sweep) search pattern is normally used when one or more of the following conditions exist: The search area is large and fairly level, Only the approximate location of the target is known, or Uniform coverage is desired. This type of search is used to search a grid. The aircraft proceeds to a corner of the search area and flies at the assigned altitude, sweeping the area maintaining parallel tracks.

Creeping Line s Direction of Search Used when fairly sure of the area. Extended line of the intended airport runways. Also specific sections of highways or victor airways. Used when search area is long, narrow, fairly level and target is thought to be on either side of the expected track.

Creeping Line: Details The creeping line search pattern is similar to the parallel patterns. The search legs of the creeping line pattern are aligned with the minor or shorter axis of rectangular search areas. The creeping line pattern is used when: the search area is narrow, long, and fairly level, the probable location of the target is thought to be on either side of the search track within two points, or there is a need for immediate coverage of one end of the search area. The creeping line is a succession of search legs along a line.

Point-based (Expanding Square) (second pass rotated 45°) Used when the approximate location of target is known. Difficult to fly accurately without a GPS. Use cardinal headings whenever possible. Gradually will cover a larger and larger area.

Point-based (Expanding Square) The expanding square search pattern is used when the search area is small (normally, areas less than 20 miles square), and the position of the survivors is known within close limits. This pattern begins at an initially reported position and expands outward in concentric squares. If the results of the first square search of an area are negative, the search unit can use the same pattern to cover the area more thoroughly.

Contour Search Objective 11.6 – Demonstrate knowledge of planning and flying a basic contour search. Density altitude and aircraft performance limitations can cause you to get into a situation that you can’t get out of. Mountain Fury course. Note: Mission Pilot must possess Mountain Flying Certification (noted on CAPF101) to fly this pattern at density altitudes above 7,500 feet. There is increased risk and specific planning is required

Contour Search Use contour search techniques in mountainous terrain other than canyons and steep valleys Begin at the highest elevation: Plan an escape route in advance Entire crew should discuss it prior to beginning each pass Maintain constant altitude while flying adjacent to steep terrain Conditions change rapidly in the mountains – even in “clear” weather. Winds, density altitude, etc. may be in flux throughout the day
