“Always to Remember: The Vision of Maya Ying Lin” Test Review Critical Reading 8 Miss Kuffa

These following questions will be in multiple choice format on the test: Who had the idea that Vietnam veterans deserved a memorial? (the name of the Vietnam veteran) Who was particularly interested in entering the memorial competition? (the types of artists) Why was Maya Ying Lin’s visit to the park where the memorial would be built a good idea? (what did the visit enable her to do?) Who had the idea for Maya Ying Lin to submit a design to the competition? (hint: Yale) How can you best describe the response to the design competition for the memorial? (were there a lot of submissions and were people enthusiastic, or were they only a few submissions and people were indifferent?)

These following questions will be in multiple choice format on the test: What were the important conditions for the design of the memorial? (look at the bulleted list) Why were the judges surprised by who won the design competition? (consider her background & age) What word would best describe the home in which Maya Ying Lin grew up? (think of her parent’s professions) What subject did Maya Ying Lin decide to concentrate on in college? (what did she major in?) When was the deadline for building the memorial? (look for a specific date) Whom does the Vietnam Veterans Memorial honor? (be specific)

These following topics will be covered in multiple choice format on the test: What does the word eloquent mean? (look in the text) What does the word unanimous mean? (look in the text; don’t confuse it with anonymous) Adverbs What are they? What ending do they often have? In this sentence, which word is the adverb? The children played perfectly at their piano recital.

Short Answer and Open Ended Response Answer in 4-5 sentences, worth 5 points: Explain some of the reasons Maya Ying Lin’s plan won the competition for designs of a Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Be specific in your description of her memorial design. Answer in an Open Ended Response format, worth 15 points: Identify two of Maya Ying Lin’s experiences that may have influenced the design she submitted in the contest for a Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
