Prompt: A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works, a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Read the provided poem below, and analyze the panther as a symbol, paying close attention to literary devices used to enhance the panther’s representation. Then, compare and contrast the poem’s symbolic theme of isolation to George Orwell’s 1984, analyzing the techniques that each writer uses to make his point about isolation.

With your group, create a thesis statement Break down the prompt with your group and focus on the theme of isolation and the authors’ purpose. Must be 3 prong, not 2. Prong 1: Introduce the texts Prong 2: Isolation (and the elements used by the authors to create it) Prong 3: Author’s purpose Create a magical and amazing thesis statement. The length of the sentence is up to you, but it must be only one sentence. You may choose to write a lengthy statement or a short one, but insightfulness is the key!! AP Q3 Prompt from 1995. thesis and chunks- 30 minutes “Writers often highlight the values of a culture or a society by using characters who are alienated from that culture or society because of gender, race, class, or creed. Choose [a character from 1984] that plays a significant role and show how that character’s alienation reveals the surrounding society’s assumptions and moral values...” Tips: Use your harvest sheets for finding data/ CD’s quickly! Think about our conversations about “Panther” and, if you feel it fits your thesis, you might discuss alienation vs. isolation. You don’t have to use Wilson for this, think of the other significant characters and what makes them significant regarding what the prompt is asking you to address. You got this!!
