Today’s Agenda Annotation / Essay prompt check Discuss “The Panther” While this is happening, discuss “The Panther” annotations and observations. Discuss “The Panther” Group-created thesis “Build a Q3 essay” by using group-created chunk paragraphs with TLQ

Prompt: A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works, a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Read the provided poem below, and analyze the panther as a symbol, paying close attention to literary devices used to enhance the panther’s representation. Then, compare and contrast the poem’s symbolic theme of isolation to George Orwell’s 1984, analyzing the techniques that each writer uses to make his point about isolation.

With your group, create a thesis statement Break down the prompt with your group and focus on the theme of isolation and the authors’ purpose. Must be 3 prong, not 2. Prong 1: Introduce the texts Prong 2: Isolation (and the elements used by the authors to create it) Prong 3: Author’s purpose Create a magical and amazing thesis statement. The length of the sentence is up to you, but it must be only one sentence. You may choose to write a lengthy statement or a short one, but insightfulness is the key!! Write your “group thesis” statement on the BACK of your annotated “Panther” poem They DO NOT have to be in this order

TLQ and “Chunks” Using TLQ techniques, please develop three “chunks” for your group’s thesis statement. Topic sentence Lead-in (context) Quote Analysis Note that a chunk must be at least 4 well developed sentences and no more than seven. Each group member needs to pick a DIFFERENT piece of data/concrete detail. Elements to consider: Structure figurative language Diction (must have application) Style poetic form and meaning Symbolism Point of View

Review and Revise together Now, together, read over your chunks – yes, out loud. Comment on the GOODS and IMPROVES. What did your group member do well? What could be improved to help make the chunk more effective?

In AP today 9.23 Bring DRAFT of college essay NEXT CLASS Discussion of 1984!!!! Feedback from “Panther” A 1995 Q3 prompt for 1984 - Putting it all together. Q&A for College essay Bring DRAFT of college essay NEXT CLASS

The Good and The Bad of “The Panther”

AP Q3 Prompt from 1995. thesis and chunks- 30 minutes “Writers often highlight the values of a culture or a society by using characters who are alienated from that culture or society because of gender, race, class, or creed. Choose [a character from 1984] that plays a significant role and show how that character’s alienation reveals the surrounding society’s assumptions and moral values...” Tips: Use your harvest sheets for finding data/ CD’s quickly! Think about our conversations about “Panther” and, if you feel it fits your thesis, you might discuss alienation vs. isolation. You don’t have to use Wilson for this, think of the other significant characters and what makes them significant regarding what the prompt is asking you to address. You got this!!
