Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy Results MDG CURRICULUM

Curriculum Change No more Modular exams. These have been replaced by terminal exams – end of Year 11 Greater emphasis on progress in English and Maths Shift to Progress 8 – measure for all Shift in the number of BTEC subjects pupils are allowed to take Qualifications will cancel each other and cannot be done together

New Measures Attainment 8 Progress 8 Best 8 scores (from 3 buckets) Averages out to a grade (+/-) Most likely to be understood by parents…. Could this be an issue? Most crucial measure…..Will determine Ofsted (or not!) May be different subjects to Attainment 8 Less likely to be understood/reported publicly as not as simple as an Attainment 8 grade

Progress 8 Attainment 8 English & Maths English Baccalaureate Grade 5 and above English Baccalaureate

School Response / Strategy Inclusion at the forefront: School will run curriculum which suit the needs of the learners – access for all. Focus on new Progress 8 measure as the key outcome for all students Focusing on ensuring that all pupils make expected progress or some make more than expected progress Curriculum has to meet the needs, ability and aspirations for ALL

An Introduction to PATHWAYS Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy Results An Introduction to PATHWAYS

GCSEs are the dominant qualification we offer. OFFERED TO ALL Key points - Fact All students will be placed into one of the three pathways and this shapes the options/subjects they can choose for starting Year 10 GCSEs are the dominant qualification we offer. OFFERED TO ALL Some pupils will have to take French or Spanish Some pupils will have to take Geography or History Initial decisions on pathways are based on pupils KS2 data as well as their Knights progress and attainment data We will continue to monitor the students throughout Year 9 in all subjects – their pathway offer can change Final decision on the pathway for your child is made late June MEC

Misunderstandings - Fiction When placed in a pathway students never meet again They are kept separate and often apart from their friends Will some pathway not allow pupils to gain access to college, good employment and even university Pathways is another name for streaming Once the initial pathway places are given there is no movement and nothing my child can do about it

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy Results ITH PARENTS INVOLVEMENT

Choice vs. interest vs. aspiration Key Stage 4 is intensive – and it does last two years Your child is an individual – they should be guided by their own interests and abilities – not their friends, the teacher they like this year, what they think sounds impressive Where are we going? I was following you! Ask the ones at the back

Opportunities and success for all Pathway decisions based upon current data in year 9 AND prior attainment Opportunity to discuss pathway: Wednesday 2nd December 2015 Wednesday 9th December 2015 Wednesday 6th January 2016 Parents Evening – 13th January 2016 Option forms returned by 15th January 2016 No final decision on pathway made until June—we continue to monitor and track progress Opportunities and success for all   ITH
