USA and EU research activity overview for future internet USA: NeTS-FIND/GENI EU: FP7/4WARD, TRILOGY Japan: New Generation Network (NwGN) Common target: Virtualization / Programmable network for next generation internet Computer & network integrated programmable network node Optical dynamic circuit switch Programmable radio & Dynamic mobility USA: NSF GENI Project Copyright (c) NEC Corporation 2008. All rights reserved. EU: FP7 4WARD Project

NSF GENI(Global Environment for Networking Innovations) Research goal: Generality (programmable component) Diversity & Extensibility (Heterogenous wired and wireless) Fidelity (Coexistence of real traffic and experimental traffic) Observability (Quantitative evaluation) Ease of Use Sliceability (Shared facility for multiple experiments) Controlled Isolation (Prohibit interference) Opt-in (service trials) Security Federation and Sustainability (15-20 year life-time) Copyright (c) NEC Corporation 2008. NEC’s research activity overview toward future internet - “Earthnet” project -

Earthnet Earthnet ‘Earthnet’ is the project name of Future Internet R&D ‘Earthnet’ provides a way to Produce the platform for various innovations Reduce the complexity Reduce the resource (energy, money,…) consumption Maximize the dependability of the Future Internet / New Generation Network I mean how we can couple new innovative technologies on top of the layers and the technologies underneath the layers. For example, new applications such as TV broadcasting or emergency communication can make the best use of lambda path technologies or mobile communication technologies. Also, how redundant functions in different layers cooperate or substitute each other. Actually we have multiple routing systems, L2 routing, L3 routing, or overlay routing. But unfortunately, they are a single-point-of-failure most of the case. I am not saying that we should abandon the IP hourglass model, but we should think what is IP, what is the center of the technologies. IP packets or IP addresses would not change, but how about IP routing or name resolution or something. In one extreme case, we could use IP packet and IP addresses with L2 routing and Ether OAM or whatever. by IT-Network virtualization technology Copyright (c) NEC Corporation 2008. Earthnet goal for infrastructure “Earthnet” is aiming at creating customized and optimized network infrastructure over: Multiple carriers/ISPs that never have single common architecture Heterogeneous IP and non-IP network technologies Earthnets Earth Wide variety of technologies Next generation Internet Wide variety of infrastructure providers Copyright (c) NEC Corporation 2008.
