Welcome! Beginning level Spanish Learning the basics: reading, writing, speaking, listening Topics covered: Introductory (greetings, good-byes, numbers, time) Classes/ School Family Pastimes/Sports Vacation (travel, weather, seasons) Shopping (clothing, colors, etc.) Daily routine/personal hygiene Food

HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR STUDENTS (if they let you ) Review vocabulary with them. Give them the English, have them say the Spanish word or phrase and write it. (Check their spelling) Spot check for meaning. Ask them the meaning of sentences you see in the book or on their hwk. Don’t worry about their pronunciation. It will come with time. Encourage them to read the hwk. out loud, to review past vocab, make flashcards Remind them that the hwk. is given to help them learn the material. It is to practice what was learned in class. It should not take hours – but it should be done! Flashcards are on my website. Have your students make the cards, you hold up the card, students says the word, then writes it.

CONTACT ME! If you notice that your student is getting behind, has a number of low scores on hwk, quizzes, etc. , please contact me If you notice that your student is no longer singing my praises and mentioning that Spanish is their favorite class, please contact me. If your student is spending hours on homework, please contact me. If you are at all concerned or have any questions, please contact me. ***I believe that kids do better when they know that all interested parties care and are communicating.***

GRADING A = 90-100% B = 80-89.99% C = 70-79.99% D = 60-69.99% F = 50-59.99% ** In the online gradebook you will see the actual score your student receives. Any grade below 50% will be computed as 50% by the computer.

CATEGORIES Interpersonal 35% Interpretative 20% Content Knowledge 35% Students will demonstrate competency through conversations, written exchanges, and presentations. Interpretative 20% Students will demonstrate comprehension of written and spoken language. Content Knowledge 35% Students will demonstrate competency in vocabulary and grammar.   Work Habits 10% Homework and in-class practice activities.

More grading info There will be opportunities for some retakes. In order to retake a quiz, the student will need to show that they have achieved at least a 75% on homework for that topic. The retake grade is the final grade. Retakes opportunities are posted on my website and on Aeries. There are time limits on the opportunities. Generally, they have 4 days after I return the quiz. Homework is recorded by the week. Homework may be completed up to a week late. Once I have recorded the homework grade, it is final. Homework is super important. It is the practice they need to “solidify” what they learned in class. Low hwk. scores often predict low performance scores.

Etc. If you want to see the Supersite, you will need to ask your students for their passwords. Check their grades periodically and ask them about the individual grades, encourage retakes when offered (posted on my website and in the gradebook). Retake grade is the final grade. Encourage your students to come in for help. IMHO: The key to doing well in Spanish 1 is keeping up with the material. We are building the foundation for future years of study (and travel, work, life!) CONSISTENCY IS KEY! 20 – 30 minutes/day (5 days/wk)

A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT WILL: Participate actively during class Do the homework (completely, correctly, read it out loud, make sure you know what it means) Ask questions Review vocabulary, phrases, verb conjugations, etc. every day Spend about 20 – 30 min./day on Spanish Check my teacher website for daily plans, homework, upcoming quizzes, etc. (calendar) Check the teacher website Spanish 1 folder to find flashcards, review sheets, etc. ****Ask questions in class when you don’t understand. And ask for help when you are lost, getting behind, etc.****
