Use this map to define what a natural border is. A border based on physical features of the earth such as rivers, mountains, etc. Natural Border - A border based on physical features of the earth such as rivers, mountains, etc. Use this map to define what a natural border is. Are the colored borders based on natural features or man-made ones?

Europe’s Borders = Primarily Based on Mountain Ranges and Rivers

Rio Grande Border With Mexico on the left and the United States on the right, the Rio Grande forges a clear barrier between the two countries.

Man-Made Borders Usually based on human characteristics, such as culture, ethnicity, Lat/Long. Why and how do we draw them? Man-Made Border = set by an agreement between people, usually based on human characteristics.

Loss of native land through western expansion Loss of native land through western expansion. It was easier to divide up land for new frontier states as it was viewed as essentially “empty land” Why are states getting larger and increasingly using man-made borders from East to West?

Russia This is part of the border between Ukraine and Russia. Where is the actual line? Is this why Russia claims its soldiers keep getting “lost” and finding themselves in Ukraine? Ukraine

The border between North and South Korea The “DMZ” The border between North and South Korea

India and Pakistan Border Man-Made borders can often be hard to see if no attempt has been made to mark them. However, some can even be so well marked that they can be seen from outer space like the border shown here between India and Pakistan. The orange line is a string of lights between the two nations.
