How to Check Reading Levels in Microsoft Word

Why Check the Levels? Teachers can use to gauge if reading materials are on the appropriate grade level. Teachers/Parents can monitor written tasks. Students can continuously monitor their grade level writing, reading ease, and percentage of passive sentences.

Open a Word Document You can use old or new word documents! Previously used document with text already typed. Begin a new text document. To check the reading level of a text, type 100 words from the beginning, middle and end of the passage, book, etc., to get a true level.

Click “Options”

Click “Proofing”

Check “Show Readability Statistics”

Perform Your Spell Check, as usual.

Get Readability Statistics!
