We Wish You a Merry Christmas!

Song Origins Written in: approx. 16th c Location: W. Country of England Composer: Anonymous The origin of this Christmas carol lies in the English tradition wherein wealthy people of the community gave Christmas treats to the carolers on Christmas Eve, such as figgy puddings that were very much like modern day Christmas puddings.[2][3] It is one of the few English traditional carols that makes mention of the New Year celebration and is often the last song carolers sing, wishing all good tidings and happy spirits at Christmastime. When: 16th century- the date of publication is not known Christmas carols were banned all throughout England between 1647-1660 by Protestant Oliver Cromwell, who thought Christmas should be a solemn day. It was then made popular again during the Victorian Era of the nineteenth century.
