Learning Goal I can analyze, comprehend and evaluate nonfiction text. FOCUS – Writing a summary
Reading One purpose of reading is to learn and understand. Reading strategies are ways to help readers understand material One reading strategy is to figure out the main idea of text. “Main idea” is a useful concept for writing a summary.
Reading What is a summary? How does “summary” relate to “main idea?”
Reading A summary is condensed (shortened) version of a larger reading. A summary is not a rewrite of the original piece and does not have to be long nor should it be long. To write a summary, use your own words to express briefly the main ideas and relevant (important) details of the piece you have read. Your purpose in writing the summary is to give the MOST IMPORTANT ideas of the original reading. What was it about and what did the author want to communicate? http://homepage.smc.edu/reading_lab/writing_a_summar y.htm
When deciding the main idea for a summary, CONSIDER: WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN HOW
Reading – Main Idea This activity is going to include three brief (short) writing assignments; each successive assignment will require you to write less. For the purpose of this assignment, it is important that you write in the same size for all three assignments. The reason for that rule will become clear as the activity proceeds.
