My power point report on western black rhinoceros I'm hoping it's not true, but hearing rumors that the Western Black Rhino has been declared extinct due to horn poachers. Vile. I found this from Snopes.com. My power point report on western black rhinoceros By
Introduction My Power Point is on a mammal called the Western Black Rhino it is a very interesting animal and I picked it because, well I tell about that on the next slide. My animal is a fairly hardy and is not an animal that lives 10 weeks and dies it lives to be very old.
Black rhinos: extinct -_- The Western Black Rhinoceros (Diceros Bicornis Longipes) are native to eastern and southern Africa, or they used to because humans killed them off. Poachers (people who kill animals illegally) shot the Western Black Rhino and only took the horn! Also wealthy business men some times take trips to Africa and go on hunting trips just to shoot this huge beast and mount its head on a wall in there house! Disgusting but true. There horn is considered a very valuable kind of ivory and is worth twice the amount of gold. People in China prize the ivory for its supposed medical uses. Humans have definitely impacted my animal: there are not even one rhino in captivity.
markings and dimensions of my animal The Western Black Rhino is about 4.5 to 6 feet high and weigh about 1,760 to 3,080 pounds. In other words about 2 and ½ tons of rhinoceros. Even though the Western Black Rhino’s name suggests that its skin color is black but it is not it is actually grey. They have no other markings and are usually solid grey. Western Black Rhinos Horns actually have two horns a bigger horn close to there snout and a smaller one a little farther back.
CLIMATE Western Black Rhinos live in a climate that varies from 70 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. June is the coolest month in eastern and southern Africa. It gets especially cold at night with temperatures dropping to almost 0 Fahrenheit. The rainy season starts in November and goes until March. Also the dry season stretches from April through October.
Western black rhinos diet Western Black Rhinos are herbivores meaning that they eat only plants so there diet consists of grass, fruit ,leaves, branches, aquatic plants, and farmers crops. While eating aquatic plants they submerge there entire head and tear the plant out by its roots! My particular Rhino has a long lip that it uses a little like an elephant uses its trunk. The Western Black Rhino is a animal that does something called browsing this is were they walk slowly and eat all the plants and grass that it comes to in its path.
MY animals ecosystem The African ecosystem is very diverse and there are many different species of flora and fauna. Western Black rhinos live mostly on savannas. The savannas have warm temperatures year round and it has low hills covered with grass. Also the savannas are home to my animal and quite a few other animals like lions, hippos, elephants, and baboons. It is mostly flat and dry, with the occasional tree.
Gestation Female Rhinos are able to give birth when they are 3.5 to 4.5 but they can only have one baby at a time and usually have a gestation period of 15 to 17 months. When having their baby they try to find a quit secluded place to give birth. Baby western Black Rhinos weigh about 80 pounds when born. Western Black Rhinos stay with their mother for 2 to 4 years and then something called rejection happens and the mother rhino says good bye to the baby, this usually happens when the mother is ready to give birth again. Rhino mothers give birth every 2.5 to 5 years.
Protection of calves Mothers defend calves with their 20” horn they drive of predators who are looking to eat her calf, they are solitary creatures so males do not protect young. But mother rhinos seem to love their calf and do not try to leave them. They do not live in groups so they don’t have more then 1 rhino defending a calf.
shelter Western Black Rhinos live on savannahs so there is not much shelter but they like tightly packed trees when they can find them. That gives them some shelter that they can feel safe in. Western black Rhinos can sleep laying down or standing up so they do not have to have a comfortable bed to sleep on.
Habits Western Black Rhinos have many habits like being very anti social the only time they want to come near each other is during mating. They also stay with there mother until the next calf comes and then they are driven off to find there own territory. They are very aggressive and will attack predators with out fear. They can’t see very well but sight and hearing are very good.
