Different Types of Catastrophes Natural Hurricane Sandy Earthquake Mudslide Tsunami Human September 11th War in Iran Attacks in Boston

Discuss and Respond What kinds of questions would people studying human catastrophes want to answer? How would these questions be different from questions that might be asked about natural catastrophes?

With your group… What kinds of questions would people studying human catastrophes want to answer? How would these questions be different from questions that might be asked about natural catastrophes?

What does ‘holocaust’ mean? Great destruction resulting in the extensive loss of life. Holocaust- with a capital H- specifically refers to this time in history.

The Holocaust We will be studying about a time in history in which a great human catastrophe occurred. This catastrophe, called the Holocaust, happened in Europe between 1933 and 1945, resulted in the death of approximately 6 million Jews (2/3 Jews living in Europe); hundreds of thousands of what the German government called Gypsies (people of foreign appearance, language, and customs); at least 250,000 people with mental or physical disabilities; more than 3 million Soviet prisoners, two million Poles, one million Slavs, and many other groups targeted by the German government.

Genocide In 1948, the United Nations defined genocide as any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, including: killing members of the group causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group trying to prevent births within the group forcibly moving children of the group to another group

Discuss & Respond Dr. David Machlis, founder of the March of Remembrance and Hope program, said “The Holocaust is not just a Jewish issue, it is a universal issue. And because it is a universal issue, we must learn from the past to enhance the experience of mankind.” What does he mean by the Holocaust is a universal issue? Why do you think it is important to study the Holocaust?

Quick note about this unit This is a tough unit to talk about…. But for all the reasons we just discussed we need to know about it. The Holocaust deals with many violent, disturbing, and scary things. Please do not go on the internet looking for information about the Holocaust with your parents being there.
