Do they use the features and structures of text types taught so far? Do they use grammatical features and vocabulary appropriate for the text types taught so far? For example – simile, metaphor, personification. Do they suggest changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning? Year 5: Why is there a boy in the girls’ bathroom? LC1 – What’s up with Bradley? LC2 – How many ways can I send a message? Children will be introduced to the book “Boy in the girl’s bathroom.” Children will read through the book. Children will pull together information to find out what we can learn about Bradley. Children will revisit the features of a diary and create a character description of Bradley. Children will locate Washington DC on a world map and a map of the USA. Children will create a mini booklet about Washington DC. Children will plan and write a diary entry as Jeff. Children will look at different ways people can communicate. They will decide which ways of communication would be suitable for the various information people will be communicating. Children will discuss what friendship is and whether it can be bought or sold. LC3 – Can I be the next Shakespeare? LC4 – Can I explore what school is like in the USA? Children will create a storyboard for a given chapter, paying attention to body language and view point. They will then perform this to the rest of the class. Children will look at the features of a play script and begin writing their play scripts for their final performance. Esafety - Children will learn what to do when they receive nasty text messages or text messages from people they are unsure of. They will complete Chloe’s online activity on cybercafe and decide the best option to take for various types of messages. Children will rehearse their script, focussing on intonation, volume and movement so that meaning is clear. Children will locate the USA and Canada on a map and identify the similarities and differences between British schools and American schools. Children will make links with their Esafety learning about communicating via the internet. Forest Academy

Year 5:Will we ever send another human to the moon? LC5 – Can we put on a great performance? Children will rehearse and perform their play script to parents and another year group. Children will discuss and write a book review of ‘There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom.’ LC1 - Do all animals start life as an egg? Children will learn the difference in the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds. They will describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals. Children will also learn about puberty as part of SRE, children will be taught in single sex groups for this. Forest Academy
