iLearn Elementary Science Session 2 Virtual Science Fair Creating Electronic Science Notebooks to Support Science Fair Projects iLearn Elementary Science Session 2
Focusing Questions What is science notebooking? How will a science notebook support science fair projects? How is an electronic science notebook set up?
Instruction
Framing The Session Today’s session will focus on: What a science notebook is used for; How a ‘written’ science notebook is set up; How to set up an electronic science notebook; How a science notebook is used to support a science fair project.”
Teaching Sections included in a Basic Science Notebook: Table Of Contents Work Pages Index (or Glossary depending on grade) References and Resources
Guided Practice At this time we will go through the step by step set up of a basic Electronic Science Notebook.

Work Time
Getting Started The electronic science notebook is all the student’s work. It is what they will draw from to create a science fair project, a report or just as reference. It is now your turn to create an Electronic Science Notebook Template. As you do this, using what you’ve seen today, what you learned in session 1 and your own experiences with your students, I want you to enhance the work pages into additional sections. Refer to the sample template you were shown, the Scientific Method and any materials or procedures that you have seen or used in your classroom.
Work Time Understanding scientific inquiry, the Scientific Method and the need for organized documentation the you will create an Electronic Science Notebook template. You will use what you have seen in this session, a sample template as well as your own prior knowledge to help create the template. If you finish early, you may review or ‘fine tune’ you template or search for and view additional internet resources on science notebooking (including finding samples of DaVinci’s Notebook or other famous scientist notebooks).

Share How can a good science notebook support the creation of a science fair project? Did you encounter any difficulties that may affect your students’ use of an Electronic Science Notebook? Do you think that the use of Electronic Science Notebooks will enhance science class instruction? In what ways?
In what ways did you expand them? Why? Share Let’s talk about some the ides that you had while your were expanding the ‘Work Pages’. In what ways did you expand them? Why?
