Problems with inner city housing Glasgow Case Study

Aims To look at the problems of inner city housing in Glasgow. To look at how these problems have been overcome.

Problems with the original tenement housing. Poor heating and lighting. Often had no running water. Outside shared toilet. No electricity. Coal fires caused smoke damage. Rats infestations. Many people lived in the same house, with one bedroom.

Problems with developments in the Gorbals. At first the houses seemed like luxury accommodation. Far more space, running water, indoor toilets.

Problems with developments in the Gorbals. However the houses were poorly built to withstand the Scottish weather. The roofs were flat and that meant flooding and then damp. The height of the buildings were a problem for old people and families with young children. The community spirit was lost when many new people moved in.

Problems with developments in the Gorbals. The building went into decay as no one took care of them. Crime rates grew and this gave the area a bad reputation. The situation got so bad that the “new” flats were again knocked down and redeveloped.

How has Glasgow changed in recent years? Watch the DvD and take notes on how Glasgow has changed over the past 30 years.
