What’s your top priority?

Graham McPhail – Cramlington Learning Village

Assessment & Reporting Classroom Environment Intervention & Tracking Documentation Departmental Handbook & SOW Student Behaviour Disruption, rewards and sanctions? Department Budget Financial focus: maintenance or development? Observations & Performance Management CPD & staff development Teaching & Learning Resources and lesson plans Assessment & Reporting Are teachers, parents & pupils able to track progress? Classroom Environment Arrangement of tables and access to ICT? Intervention & Tracking Use data to plan targeted interventions and evaluate impact Whole School Vision Does the department’s vision of teaching and learning fit with the whole school vision?

Interview all students who are underachieving – find out why. Work out how much you spend annually on resources. Know how much is left over. Plan for development over a period of years. If it is expensive write a curriculum bid. Explore other income sources e.g. NCETM, Royal Society, Business Set up a lesson report. Interview all students who are underachieving – find out why. Create an automated detention system on a specific night Promote rewards and their use. Visit classrooms – give feedback Qn What goes in a handbook? Things you need to tell your staff Information for parents Exam analysis and action plans What about the SOW? Use lesson plans to drive change in the department. Prepare lessons without text books. Create a departmental data base to collect assessment results. Track progress against sub levels or target grades. Inform parents if a pupil under achieves, find out why, discuss options. Adopt a teaching and learning model for example the accelerated learning cycle. Use departmental time to explain the model and its purpose. Write a unit of work using the model take feedback and improve on it. Share with staff the features of an outstanding lesson. Agree a focus for an observation eg differentiation, plenary, engagement Set performance targets that will promote change in the department What is the whole schools vision. If it is not clear to you, refer to the school development plan and follow this up with meetings with your Line Manager. If there is no common lesson plan or observation sheets find out why. Share how intervention can work in the classroom Timetable intervention for maths staff to withdraw or support pupils Select pupils for SECURE Employ a maths coach Inform tutors and use mentors Plan for a ‘Starbucks Experience’ Ask yourself: What do I want the curriculum to deliver? Make a plan of what you would like the department to look like. Design accommodation to meet the needs of the curriculum. Submit the plan to the head teacher.
