Journal #12 What is one thing you would change about yourself? What are steps you would go about to make that change? What is stopping you from starting now?

BRITISH RULE IN INDIA

The Sepoy Mutiny British power in India increased while the power of Mogul rulers declined. The British East India Company had their own soldiers and forts to maintain power. They hired Indian soldiers known as sepoys to protect their interests. In 1857, Indian distrust of the British led to a revolt, the First War of Independence, according to the sepoys.

SEPOY MUTINY/1ST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE A rumor spread that the British were issuing bullets greased with cow (sacred to Hindus) and pig (taboo to Muslims) fat. The sepoys refused to load their rifles; they were arrested and this led to a revolt. Within a year, loyal Indian troops along with British, crushed the rebellion. Even though the sepoys outnumbered the British, they were not organized and had to deal with rivalries between Hindus and Muslims.

British Rule The British ruled India directly through an official called a viceroy. There were benefits to British rule. It brought order and stability to society. It led to fairly honest and efficient government.

British Rule There were costs to British rule. It brought economic hardship to millions as local industry was destroyed. Despite education, Indians were never considered equals of the British.

Indian Nationalist Movement In 1885, a group of Indians met to form the Indian National Congress. They began by calling for a share in the governing process in India. In 1915, Mohandas Gandhi became active in an independence movement. He set up a movement based on non-violent resistance. Ultimately, Gandhi’s movement would lead to Indian independence.
