SUSTAINILIBLITY Presented to you by Green Environment Service 5 HONESTY Queenstown Primary School

The importance of conservation Environmental conservation practices are needs to be stepped up for the sake of future generation. Over reliance and inconsiderate usage have caused natural resources to be depleted at an alarming rate with grave consequences.

Sustainable Green Idea We eat and drink using disposable cups and containers often. It is not wrong but, when you finish eating or drinking using the these cups or containers, we will throw it away. And if that happens a lot , there will be a lot of waste and it will find its way to the ocean. In the end, our waterways may become polluted due to the increased waste. Read on to find out more !

What’s so bad about plastic? For plastic bottles, there is BPA in them and if you the water bottle use for too long, it might harm your body. So that’s why some water bottles have a tag that say ‘BPA free’. And BPA is an industrial chemical that can seep into our drinks and harm our body. Plastic bags also pose a serious danger to birds and marine mammals that often mistake them for food. Floating plastic bags regularly fool sea turtles into thinking they are one of their favourite prey, jellyfish.

Sustainable Green Idea Replace these disposable containers with eco friendly mugs or water bottles.

Plastic disposable cups vs Melamine cups for cold drinks A Financial analysis Cost of 1 plastic cup - $0.01 Cost of 1 melamine cup- $0.50 (eco friendly) With an start up seed fund of $ 500 for cups for a school enrolment of 1300 students. Types of cups Plastic cups Melamine conclusion Kick start with a purchase of 50000 1000 Make sense to use washable cups than disposable ones Daily disposal 1300 Nil Monthly disposal 26000 Yearly disposal 234000 Additional funds needed to purchase cups $ 1840 There would be a savings of $ 1840 in the first year year if school vendors switch to melamine cups which would have been spent to buy more plastic disposable cups.

We will also reduce our carbon emission. The production of 1 kg of polyethylene, requires the equivalent of 2 kg of oil for energy and raw material. Polyethylene is the most commonly used plastic for plastic bags. Burning 1 kg of oil creates about 3 kg of carbon dioxide. In other words: Per kg of plastic, about 6 kg carbon dioxide is created during production and incineration. 20 plastics cups = ~ 200 g in weight ( 7 oz) 234000 plastic cups = 2340000 g ( 2340 kg) When 1 kg of plastic is produced or incinerated , there is 6 kg of carbon emission. Therefore 2340 kg of plastic = 14040 kg of carbon emission. When all drinks vendor switch to melamine cups which are reusable, they would help reduce carbon emission tremendously.

Other Sustainable idea….. We are using too much air conditioner and lights in school like the school library, computer lab and every other places that has air conditioner and lights in our school. How to solve it? Answer at next slide!

Sustainable Green Idea 2 We can use natural sunlight instead of using lights during daytime in our classrooms. During Daytime

We can save $460 by not using the air conditioner! We can go to Universal Studio with $460!
