2004 Tsunami

Our group have decided to concentrate on order of events during the 2004 Tsunami. Our lesson plan consists of being given an information sheet to look through in groups then doing lots of fun activities to learn more about the devastating Tsunami in 2004 and also help you in the future in case this sort of thing were to happen in the future.

Task 1 Instruction sheet: Firstly, Read through the timing sheet then have a look at the task sheet. In two’s link the country with the correct number. The sheets and information will help you figure it out. The countries are in a mixed up order of when they were hit. (By the tsunami) There will be an answer sheet at the end to see who had won.

Task 2: Indonesia was hit first after an unexpected earthquake, This earthquake caused mass destruction and horror for the people. Not long after the tsunami hit the coastline, It was heading towards Sri Lanker. In Sri lanker people had no clue o0f the devastation it had cause in Indonesia and they were unprepared the same happened with India, Thailand and Somalia. Each getting hit one after the other. As the tsunami moved further away from the epicentre the wave calmed down but still caused damage when hitting Burma, Maldives, Malaysia and Tanzania. The wave carried on traveling all the way to Seychelles, Bangladesh and Kenya. Kenya had the least damage as it was the furthest away.

Indonesia Malaysia Thailand Burma Bangladesh India Maldives Somalia Kenya Tanzania Sri Lanker Seychelles 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th

Task 3 Put the following statements into the correct order: Plates move towards Eurasian plate. Plate is forced downwards. Tsunami crashes onto land, crushes low-lying areas. In shallow water waves slow to 40 km/h increase height to 15 metres. Plates move cause earthquake. Sea is pushed up by earthquake causing tsunami. In deep sea waves travel up to 800 km/h.

This is the correct order: Plates move towards Eurasian plate. Plate is forced downwards. Plates move cause earthquake. Sea is pushed up by earthquake causing tsunami. In deep sea waves travel up to 800 km/h. In shallow water waves slow to 40 km/h increase height to 15 metres. Tsunami crashes onto land, crushes low-lying areas.

We hope this helped you all understand a bit more about the Tsunami in 2004. We hope you learnt something and had fun at the same time. We also hope we gave you enough information about it and it wasn’t too confusing for you all. Hopefully the sources, pictures and the games weren’t boring. We tried to make it as fun as possible so you have a lot to do but not drag it on too much.
