Positive remarks about the environment

LED-lamps The students of our school replaced the old neon light lamps during the electricity lessons by LED-lamps. LED-lamps consume less energy than usual lamps, 2,5 till 5 Watt instead of 30-50 Watt.

To save water The students of our school placed a rain cover in the kitchen during the lessons of central heating. They can use this rainwater: - To water the plants - To clean the floor - To do the dishes

To save water Our school placed automatic urinals and taps. Before, the students left the taps open. A leaking tap consumes 4 l an hour or 35 000 l per year! A leaking toilet wastes more or less 30 l an hour or 260 000 l per year! That won’t happen again in our school.

To recycle wood The students of the wood section use detritus of wood to make other pieces of work. They also use MDF-plates and fibre plates, that are plates that exist out of detritus of wood.

To recycle wood 3000 till 4000 square meters of wood are being cut off per second! That is more or less one football field per second. That is why they use FSC-wood in our school, that means that for every tree they cut, they plant another one instead.

To compost The students of the wood section made compost barges. In these compost barges the students of the care section throw their waste/detritus of fruit and vegetables. They use the compost in order to make the plants in their kitchen grow better.

Garbage in the art lessons During the art lessons, the students often use leftovers. They, for example, make clothing out of detritus Each year, our Christmas tree is made out of it too. This year the students made a Christmas tree out of newspapers.

Plants On the environmental day (16th February) the pupils of the first grade painted their flower pots and planted the flowers. Now every class has their own plant in the classroom.

Negative remarks about the environment

To recycle waste During a lot of years our garbage was thrown in one dustbin. We did not recycle!!! But, on 27th of February we received 47 yellow and 7 big blue dustbins from ‘NetBrussel’ to recycle. The yellow ones are for paper and carton. The blue ones are for plastic, metal and beverage cartons.

To throw waste on the ground Now that the new dustbins have arrived, the students have to change their attitude. The students produce too much waste and a lot of students throw their waste on the ground. Maybe that will change thanks to the new dustbins we have built for this Comenius project?  YES, we did not only made a design of the original waste-cans, but we also made them!

Original waste-cans The pupils of the second grade basic mechanics made this dustbin. All the garbage that the cleaning team finds on the ground, they throw it into this dustbin. If the garbage gets until the red line, the soft drink automat will be turned off.

Original waste-cans The pupils of the third grade basic mechanics made this tool. With this machine pupils can crush their cans. The volume of the garbage bags will decrease. That means less garbage bags.
