4-4 Multiplying fractions and Mixed Number What You’ll Learn To multiply fractions To multiply mixed numbers

Example 1: Multiply Fractions Solve. 4/9 x 2/5 = ? Solution: Multiply the numerators (4 x 2 = 8) Multiply denominators (9 x 5 = 45). Reduce to lowest terms if applicable

Example 2: Multiply Fractions with Numbers Solve: 9 x 2/5 = ? Step 1: Write the problem. Step 2: Change the whole number into fraction. Place the whole number in the numerator and make the denominator 1. Step 3: Multiply the numerators (9 x 2 = 18) and the denominators (1 x 5 = 5). Step 4: Reduce 18/5 to a mixed fraction. Five (5) will divide into 18 three times (making a whole number 3) with 3 left over. The 3 that are left over become a new fraction: 3/5.

Example 3: Multiply Fractions and Mixed Numbers Solve: 7 2/3 x 4 5/6 = ? Step 1: Rewrite the problem vertically. Step 2: Rewrite the mixed fraction as an improper fraction. For example, to change 7 2/3 into a fraction multiply the denominator with the whole number (3 x 7 = 21). Then add the product with the numerator (21 + 2 = 23). The denominator remains the same. Step 3: Multiply the numerators and denominators. Step 4: Reduce fraction to lowest terms. A fraction is in lowest terms when the numerator and denominator do not have a common factor greater than one. Rewrite the fraction as a mixed number. Divide the numerator by the denominator. Write the quotient as the whole number and put the remainder in the numerator position. For example, 667 divided by 18 is 37 with a remainder of
