Group Activity Get into groups of 4 You are to take the role of a European monarch (king or queen). You are giving a charter to a nobleman who wants to found a colony in the New World. You are to decide how this colony is to be governed. What type of government should the colony have? Where should it be located? Should it make friends or enemies with the natives? Should it be a trading colony, mining colony, farming colony, plantation colony, or religious colony? Who gets to live there?

Spanish Exploration of the Southeast and Southwest Juan Ponce De Leon discovered Florida for Spain in 1512. Hernando De Soto discovered the Mississippi River in 1541 In 1565, Pedro Menendez founded the city of St. Augustine

The Dutch Colony of new Netherland The Dutch claimed land in the area that is now part of the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware They called their colony New Netherland. Peter Minuit bought Manhattan Island from the Native Americans and founded New Amsterdam which is now called New York City. They fought a war with Swedish settlers and eventually defeated them.

Consider This Discuss with your shoulder partner, then in the Notes section of your notebook, write a paragraph answering the following question. If you were there… The people of your village in France have always belonged to the same church. Now in the 1600s, your village is divided over religious beliefs. You have heard about the Dutch colony of New Netherland in America, where people can practice any religion freely. You would like to leave for America, but your parents are unwilling to leave their home. How would you persuade your family to emigrate (leave)?

English colony The English began colonizing in the late 1500s Sir Walter Raleigh received a charter in 1584 for a colony Charter – is a document that gives someone permission to start a colony John White started the colony of Roanoke in 1587. He left for three years and when he came back, the colony was lost. The English committed atrocities against the Native Americans They removed them from their lands and fought wars with them.

Group Activity Get into groups of four Discuss ways that you think the Colony of Roanoke may have become lost. What do you think happened to the colony? Create a skit describing what you think happened to the colony. Write a script, assign roles, rehearse the skit. Then present the skit to the class

French Colony Jacques Cartier claimed Canada for France Samuel De Champlain founded Quebec Louis Jolliet claimed Mississippi for France The French built outposts, traded with the Native Americans, learned their language, and lived among the Native Americans.
