Part 7: God’s Recipe for Unity The Church… …and your part in it. Part 7: God’s Recipe for Unity

Ephesians 4: 1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

What’s the “therefore” there for?? Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (1:3) For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. (1:4) In love He predestined us to be adopted as His sons through Jesus Christ… (1:5) In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. (1:7-8)

What’s the “therefore” there for?? He made known to us the mystery of His will according to his good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ. (1:9) In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will . (1:11) Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit … (1:13)

What’s the “therefore” there for?? As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins… (2:1) But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. (2:4-5) And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. (2:6-7)

What’s the “therefore” there for?? …we are God's workmanship … (2:10) (Each of us is God’s poem, His work of art!)

9But what does “He ascended” mean except that He descended to the lower parts of the earth? 10The One who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things. 11And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness.

For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think, but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. (Romans 12:3) For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10) workmanship = poem (a work of art)

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. (Galatians 2:20) I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. (Galations 6:9) Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 15:57-58) Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more, as you see the day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:23-25)

forbearance = refusing to retaliate even when I have the means and the right to do so You have heard it said, “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say to you, do not resist him who is evil, but whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Matthew 5:38-39)

agape love reaches out to others agape love = an unconquerable benevolence based not on emotion, but on will; a commitment to the best benefit of another in obedience to God agape love reaches out to others sacrifices of self gives what is needed is active holds nothing back is undeserved is the way God loves us

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this will all men know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13:34-35) We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for (one another). (1 John 3:16)
