The Respiratory System. Function: The system of the body that deals with breathing The body takes in the oxygen that it needs and removes the carbon dioxide.
The Respiratory System. Respiratory system: moves oxygen into the body & removes carbon dioxide produced as wastes.
The set of organs that allows a person to breathe and exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body.
The Respiratory System. Function The main function of the Respiratory System is to get oxygen into the bloodstream and get carbon dioxide out of the bloodstream.

September 14, 2017 Materials: ISN, pencil, colored pencils Bell Ringer: When people run long distances, their muscles require increased amounts of oxygen. Which body system is responsible for carrying this oxygen to the muscles? Nervous Respiratory Digestive Circulatory

EQ: What is the main function of the respiratory system? CO: We will identify the function of the respiratory system by creating a foldable. CT: I will write an explanation of how the circulatory and respiratory system interact with each other on my human body system handout. SG: I will manage my time when working on independent class work.

Respiratory System What are the different parts of the respiratory system and what are their functions? http://kidshealth.org/kid/closet/movies/RSmovie.html?tracking=59983_C How the Body Works -5 Minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MDn5GgyxyU Incredible Human Machine-10 Minutes

The respiratory system moves oxygen from the outside environment into the body. Oxygen is needed for the energy releasing chemical reactions that take place in cells. Like fire needs oxygen to burn, your cells cannot ‘burn’ enough fuel to keep you alive without oxygen.

Respiration: process by which oxygen and glucose undergo a complex series of chemical reactions inside a cell’s mitochondria to make energy. Process produces CO2 which is eliminated by the respiratory system.

1. Nasal Cavity: warms air, has a mucus lining and cilia (hairs) to filter out particles. 2. Mouth: plan ‘B’ for breathing Color 1 and 2 on your diagram red.

3. (THROAT) Pharynx: leads from nasal passage and mouth to the larynx 3. (THROAT) Pharynx: leads from nasal passage and mouth to the larynx. (If you open your mouth and look past the uvula, you will see the oral pharynx.) 4. Larynx: next passageway for air. The voice box is located here. Color the pharynx yellow. Color the larynx green.

6. Epiglottis: a flap of tissue that prevents food from going into or blocking the respiratory system. Color the epiglottis purple.

Food went down the wrong pipe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYsz2Od5jDQ

7. Trachea: about 4.5 inches long; surrounded by rings of cartilage to keep it open so air can travel through it freely. Lined with cilia. 8. Bronchus: tubes that branch from trachea; one to each lung and are lined with cilia. Color the trachea blue. Color the bronchus red.

9. Bronchiole: each bronchi divides and subdivides like branches of a tree. Air is now moistened, filtered, and body temperature. color bronchiole brown

10. Alveoli: tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place 10. Alveoli: tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place. Link between the respiratory and circulatory system. color the enlarged picture of the alveoli pink.

11. Diaphragm: large sheet-like muscle that contracts when you breath in to expand lungs and relaxes when you breath out compressing the lungs to force carbon dioxide and other waste products out. Color the diaphragm yellow.

Emphysema: serious disease that destroys lung tissue and causes breathing problems. Asthma: long term respiratory condition when air passages narrow; cause wheezing, shortness of breath.

Respiratory System How does the respiratory system work with other body systems? Muscular System: Muscles called the diaphragm contracts and relaxes allowing lungs to pull in and push out air; provides the fresh oxygen needed for muscles to function; provides an out for waste (carbon dioxide). Circulatory System: Transports the oxygen and carbon dioxide which is inhaled and exhaled by the respiratory system.
