Presentation transcript:

Ship Coordination Issues Uncoordinated use of identical ships by different networks waste of resources, unhappy crews, overload of ship tasks “Why several people come with different tasks without knowing each other?” Realized, but unexploited opportunities unhappy ship operators, unnecessary gaps in networks “I agreed to deploy instruments but never heard of them again” Unavailability of centralized and detailed future cruise plans Inefficient deployment management, unnecessary gaps in networks “I must search on multiples sites and get only some roughly gridded routes”

Ship Coordination Solutions Use of GOOS wide ship reference list used by all networks Identify & balance all GOOS related operations, share logistics Creation of joint umbrella program for opportunity ships Speak with one voice to ship operators, owners, officers OCG-JCOMMOPS Opportunity Ship Survey: Participate! Where do you need how many ships how often for what? JCOMM Ship Owner Forum, driven by SOT, hosted by IMO Turn joint needs into concrete recommendations and action plan With: IOC/WMO/IMO/ICS/IHO/WOC, GOOS networks, shipping community

JCOMMOPS Cruise Information Center Supported by International Research Ship Operators (IRSO) Fed M2M (e.g. UNOLS), or manually on JCOMMOPS website Comprises drawing tools (incl. great circle) for facile submissions Uses shared ship list across all observing networks (IMO/ICES ID) Visualizes network status and available cruises in same map Masks cruise details to user groups if required by security policy Incorporates cruises from all kind of ship types

OCG-JCOMMOPS Opportunity Ships Survey

Ex: Visualize specific Cruises & Instruments

Other Sources: Insufficient Details – yet to be sync’ed

Precise & easy Submissions: Manual & M2M

Ex: Contributions of Ships across Networks

Less Security Concerns? AIS status (RT) Gulf of Aden “Flying under the Radar” anyway does not really work, and ship operators tend to be less restrictive regarding the availability of cruise plans

Take Home Messages and Recommandations We can set up deployment (and other) operations with research ships, commercial vessels, sailing yachts, ... as piggy back project or chartered turn-key solution jointly with other networks to minimize logistic efforts anywhere in the world, including “remote” and “dangerous” sea areas We need to know more about your requirements Participate in survey and nominate member for Organizing Committee of Ship Owner Forum Please help evaluate and optimize the JCOMMOPS website Submit your instrument metadata (deployment reports and plans), and also cruise information, both using our shared ship list
