Physiological effects of smoking

The RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Long Term Effects

Problems that can arise with the respiratory system Cardiovascular disease Chronic bronchitis Emphysema Mouth and tongue cancer Lung cancer Pneumonia tuberculosis

Cardiovascular disease Also known as heart disease. Clogging of the artery walls due to plaque and toxin build up.

Chronic bronchitis Affects bronchi Bacterial infection that causes a cough due to the clogging of the bronchi walls

emphysema Alveoli lose their ability to stretch; symptoms include difficulty breathing.

Mouth & tongue cancer Uncontrolled cell growth in the mouth and on the tongue. Leads to tumors. Biggest cause- smokeless tobacco.

Lung cancer Cancer formed on lung due to damage of the cells that line the lungs. Second Leading cancer in both men and women.

pneumonia Bacterial or viral disease (fluid in the lungs). Fever, hard to breathe, chest pain.

tuberculosis Bacterial disease that affects lungs. Tiredness cough, can be fatal.

Short Term effects of smoking

Immediate effects of smoking Heart rate increases Hand steadiness decreases Amount of carbon monoxide in lungs increases Temperature of your skin decreases

Heart rate

Definition # of times your heart beats in one minute

Things that effect your heart rate Exercise Emotions Relaxation Smoking

Resting heart rate the number of times your heart beats per minute while at complete rest Find your pulse (wrist or neck). My resting heart rate __________bpm

Maximum heart rate fastest rate at which your heart will beat in one minute To find: 220 – your age My Maximum Heart rate _______bpm

Target Heart Rate A specific age-based pulse rate to be maintained during exercise

Target Heart rate worksheet Find your own target heart rate!
