Path dependency How a region develops over time is path dependent – e.g. a bias towards one type of urban form results in reinforcing structures that drive development further in that direction and make it hard to move to an alternative.

A Ministry of Science and Innovation funded research project to provide synergistic modelling tools to support integrated decision making in Auckland and Wellington. Tools include: A system dynamics modelling process that can be used by a wide range of stakeholders An integrated Spatial Explorer (the software interface) operated by Council staff Both types of models work together to allow the simulation of development pathways and visualisation of future change.

Wellington Region GPI: Indicator Selection Criteria Indicator should be a statistical measure that is: 1. Reliable 2. Valid 3. Repeatable 4. Shows change 5. Easily understandable 6. Can be aggregated or disaggregated 7. Culturally meaningful and relevant 8. Available 9. Cost effective Consider adding as criteria: Exhibits significant influence, or is significantly influenced - in a causal loop. Does not overlap with another indicator - incommensurable Level of significance to well-being is similar across all indicators Provides comparability with other key well-being frameworks

Full Cost Accounts (FCA) Joint work: WRS/GWRC, Waikato RC and Auckland Council Physical Inactivity FCA completed Feb 2013. Underemployment Scoping exercise (completed Sept 2013) determined insufficient data available for FCA. Process informed a report reviewing underemployment of migrants. Flooding Scoping exercise (completed Sept 2013) determined insufficient data available for FCA at current time – required data could improve over time. Valuing Natural Assets Central govt. began work on National Natural Capital Assessment (NNCA) in 2012. Awaiting development of NNCA methodology before considering applying it to any FCA on ecosystem services. Income Inequality Scoping exercise (completed July 2011) determined insufficient data available for FCA. “Attempts to measure macro effects of income inequality would be expensive and not targeted to regional affairs… more meaningful to measure concentrations of quintiles of the income distribution at a regional level.”
