This lesson explains what is being done in the areas of intervention and prevention of drug and alcohol abuse.

Lesson Objectives Identify the internal and external pressures teenagers face. Explain ways to handle or resist internal and external pressures teenagers face. Describe effective prevention techniques employed by that national, school – and/or community – based programs focused on substance abuse.

Introduction When it comes to drugs, it is important you make a good decision before you make a mistake. You need a plan of action to cope with all the pressures you might face.

Handling Internal Pressures Accept and analyze your emotions. Consider why you are feeling your emotions and address the cause. Seek out help when you feel overwhelmed. Find alternatives to drug use. Release excess energy and learn how to relax. Practice patience.

Resisting External Pressure Learn how to refuse drugs effectively. Prepare yourself for situations where you may be offered drugs. Analyze media and advertising.

First Aid for Alcohol or Drug Overdose Keep the victim awake and conscious. Protect overly active, aggressive, or panic-stricken victims. Monitor the victim’s breathing. Reassure the victim that he or she will be ok. Call for emergency medical services.
