What is Pharmacy? Pharmacists are experts in the use of medicine and use this knowledge to help patients. They supervise the supply of medicines and advise other healthcare professionals about their safe and effective use. They also manage minor illness with medicines available over the counter.
How do you become a Pharmacist? You must have AAAB grades in Maths, Chemistry, English, Biology or Physics. You have to have an accredited Masters degree in pharmacy. The university course takes 5 years. Normal entry is at year 2. You have to be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to work as a pharmacist.
How does pharmacy use maths? Pharmacy uses maths in calculating the correct dosage when the dose is dependent on weight or kidney functions. Therapeutic drug monitoring uses maths to calculate correct dosage regimes for drugs with narrow therapeutic ranges.
Maths is used to calculate the amount of raw ingredients in the preparation of medicines, such as ointments. Maths is used to calculate the volume required of liquid medicines for particular doses.
