California Missions Ashley Ramos February 12,2008

Carmel Mission Located in Carmel ,California. Founded by Padre Junipero Serra. Established in 1771. Native Americans provided the labor for crops and construction. Father Serra is buried under the altar in the church.

Santa Cruz mission Located in Santa Cruz ,California. Established Aug. 29,1791. Named for “Celebration of the Sacred Cross.” Name given by explorer Gaspar De Portola. Original inhabitants were the Ohlone and Youkut tribes.

Santa Barbara mission It’s called “The Queen of the Mission”. Established on Dec. 4,1786. Tenth mission built in California. The original inhabitants of this area were the Chumash tribe. Located in Santa Barbara, CA.

Mission San Juan Bautista Located in San Juan Bautista, CA. Dedicated on June 24,1797. The first baptism was a ten year old Indian boy. The mission was built by Spanish Corporal Juan Ballestros. The mission is located by an earthquake fault.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Named for St. John of Capistrano. Founded November 1,1776 on All saints Day. Native tribe were the Acjachen. It is the oldest building in California. Father Serra’s chapel is still used for services.

Mission San Jose First founded in June 11, 1797. Located in the mission district in Fremont, California. Native tribe was the Miwok. The Miwoks called the town “Oroysom”. Founding priest was Father Fermin Las Ven.
