Jacob and Esau Read the stories Genesis 25 http://www.thebricktestament.com/genesis/jabocb_takes_esaus_inheritance/01_gn25_21.html http://www.thebricktestament.com/genesis/jacob_and_rebekah_decieve_elderly_isaac/01_gn27_01-04.html

Jacob and Esau You can use the bibles to help you if you wish (Genesis 25-29). Tell the story of Jacob stealing Esau’s birthright. Why would Esau have received the blessing (if he had not been tricked). Why was the blessing so important? Do you think it was Jacob or Esau’s descendents who became the Israelites (Hebrews)? Do you think Jacob did the right thing? What evidence is there that God knew beforehand that Jacob would get the birthright. Do you think God punished Jacob for what he did? If so, how could he have done this. If not, why not. Read Genesis chapter 29- Why do you think God allowed this to happen? What do you notice happening each time people go against God’s will? Barren, prophecy, Birth, Favourite sons, Soup incident, Isaac death/blessing, trick, revenge

Isaac prayed to Yahweh for Rebekah because she was unable to bear children.

Yahweh responded to his prayer, and his wife became pregnant, but the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, ‘If this is the way things are, why go on living?’ And Yahweh said, ‘Two nations are in your womb. One will be stronger than the other. The elder will serve the younger.’

When Rebekah gave birth, indeed there were twins in her womb When Rebekah gave birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. The first one came out red all over and like a hairy garment, and they named him Esau. Then his brother came out with his hand grabbing Esau’s heel, and they named him Jacob.

The boys grew up, and Esau became a skilled hunter of the fields The boys grew up, and Esau became a skilled hunter of the fields. And Isaac preferred Esau because he had a taste for wild game.

One day Esau came home from the field famished, and Jacob was cooking some stew.

Esau said to Jacob, ‘Feed me some of that red stuff, for I am famished Esau said to Jacob, ‘Feed me some of that red stuff, for I am famished.’ Jacob replied, ‘First transfer to me your inheritance.’

Esau said, ‘Look, I am about to die. What good is an inheritance to me Esau said, ‘Look, I am about to die! What good is an inheritance to me?’ And Jacob replied, ‘First swear an oath to me.’

So Esau swore to Jacob an oath and transferred his inheritance, and then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew.
