Plant and Animal Adaptations Home to many plants such as the Saw Palmetto and alligators. Alligators are usually found in swamps. A swamp is a wetland in which mostly trees and other woody plants grow. They make great habitats for alligators because they contain a mixture of saltwater and freshwater. Plants that eat animals are also found in swamps. A dune is a mound of sand formed by moving wind and water. Plants that grow in dunes must adapt to poor soil, salt spray, and strong winds. Roots of plants help to create dunes because the roots trap sand and hold it in place.
