Georgia Habitats & Adaptations Name: ____________________ Georgia Habitats & Adaptations Study Guide A mountain is an area of high land. Brasstown Bald is the highest mountain in Georgia. The mountains are home to many plants and animals, including Mountain Laurel, Pine Trees, deer and black bears. Black bears can survive in the cold weather of the mountains because of their thick, dense fur. Mountains also have rivers and streams that are cold, clear, and rocky. They flow downhill quickly. Appalachian Plateau Ridge & Valley Blue Ridge Mountains Mountains Piedmont means “foothills” and is an area of gently rolling land (hills) between a coast and mountains. Most people live in this region Has many rivers and streams that are muddier and slower than rivers and streams in the mountains. Home to many different types of trees, birds, and animals. Warm, summers, cool winters Piedmont

Plant and Animal Adaptations Home to many plants such as the Saw Palmetto and alligators. Alligators are usually found in swamps. A swamp is a wetland in which mostly trees and other woody plants grow. They make great habitats for alligators because they contain a mixture of saltwater and freshwater. Plants that eat animals are also found in swamps. A dune is a mound of sand formed by moving wind and water. Plants that grow in dunes must adapt to poor soil, salt spray, and strong winds. Roots of plants help to create dunes because the roots trap sand and hold it in place. Swamps and Marshes Coast Atlantic Ocean Coastal Plains Plant and Animal Adaptations Animals use adaptations such as camouflage or mimicry to avoid being captured or to look dangerous to a predator. Plants may die if there are changes to their habitats, or adapt if the change happens over a long period of time.
