Alabama Course of Study Analyze characteristics of early civilizations in respect to technology, division of labor, government, calendar, and writings. Comparing significant features of civilizations that developed in the Tigris-Euphrates valleys. Identifying on a map locations of cultural hearths of early civilizations.

Today’s Learning Targets I will use the academic vocabulary of this region and time appropriately. I will identify the physical and cultural features of this region on a map. I will identify the geographical characteristics needed for a civilization to develop. I will outline Sumerian achievements.

Warm-up Questions Read the following passage: “Go to school, stand before your ‘school-father,’ recite your assignment, open your schoolbag, write your tablet… After you have finished your assignment and reported to your monitor (teacher), come to me, and do not wander about in the street.” What answer best describes the meaning of the passage? Sumerians had few students to go to school. Sumerians valued education for their children. Monitors were very strict and demanded much from their students.
