Six sigma matrix-total Role of six sigma matrix in clinical chemistry Dr Sunil Kumar Nanda, Dr Lopamudra Ray, Mrs Asha Introduction Six Sigma uses basic tools to reduce error through quantitative methods of benchmarking, design of experiments and analysis of variation. Six sigma provides a general methodology to describe performance on sigma scale. We aimed to gauge our laboratory performance by sigma metrics Discussion 3-sigma level is regarded as the minimum acceptable level of quality. The six sigma idea asserts an association between the numbers of product defects, wasted operating costs and levels of customer satisfaction The sigma value indicates how often defects are likely to occur; the higher the sigma value, the less likely the process will produce defects In the present study, Sigma values were calculated for the biochemical parameters – Glucose, Urea, Creatinine, Total Bilirubin, Total Protein, Albumin, Uric acid, Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Chloride, SGOT, SGPT and ALP. For parameters - Total bilirubin, uric acid, SGOT, SGPT and ALP, the six sigma value was found to be more than 6. For parameters – glucose, Creatinine, triglycerides, urea the six sigma value was found to be between 3 to 6. For parameters – total protein, albumin, cholesterol and chloride, the six sigma value was found to be less than 3. Conclusion : Six sigma matrix can be used as a additional formula which can be used to evaluate the performance of the parameters in the internal and external QC. Objective Evaluation of six sigma matrix in interpretation of Quality control in biochemistry laboratory Biochemical parameters Sigma value was calculated for the biochemical parameters – Glucose, Urea, Creatinine, Total Bilirubin, Total Protein, Albumin, Uric acid, Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Chloride, SGOT, SGPT and ALP.
