Interview Overview Find out if interviews are required, optional or not available. The interview is part of the application process at many colleges but not at all colleges. If available check the website or contact admissions office to find out how to set one up. The interview may occur by Skype or in person. Prepare for the interview by researching the college to understand why it is a good fit for you and practice interviews with family and friends. The interview gives the college representative a chance to know you better. Share information beyond what is on your transcript. Discuss your goals, why you want to attend the college, and ask questions about the college.

General Interview Questions Asked by the College Representative Why do you want to go to college Why do you want to attend this college Tell me about your high school experiences or hobbies What three adjectives best describe you What are your strengths and weaknesses What activities do you find most interesting What do you want to do after college graduation Do you have a major in mind and why

Questions for You to Ask What advice do you have for incoming freshman Why should I choose this college Tell them your major and ask about the size of the freshman and upper class courses. Is there opportunity for independent or advanced research within most majors How many students are typically housed in a dorm Off campus what cultural or recreational opportunities are available in the area

Questions for You to Ask What type of freshman orientation is offered, how long is it and when does it occur I am involved in, whatever your hobby or sport. How could I actively become involved on campus How is the advising system set up for freshman and who does the advising What are some of the best features of this college Does this college give credit for courses taken on other campuses

Pass or Fail is not an Option Your Option is to Make a Good Impression Dress nicely – not in jeans and a t-shirt Arrive early Be polite Avoid slang or inappropriate language Be confident but not arrogant Answer questions honestly Send a handwritten thank-you not to your interviewer the day after the interview
