“The Rooted Life: Time to Go Hunting” Today’s Message: “The Rooted Life: Time to Go Hunting” 3

1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 16Rejoice always, 17pray continually, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22reject every kind of evil. 4

22abstain from every appearance of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 22abstain from every appearance of evil. ~KJV 5

Colossians 2:16-19 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow. 6

Colossians 2:20-23 20 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining self indulgence. 7

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, Colossians 3:1-4 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 8

“ Paul calls believers to allow the things above, where Christ is, to direct their lives. These are the things that are ultimate and transcendent and contrast with the “philosophy’s” dependence on “the basic principles of this world” (2:8, 20), “human tradition” (2:8), and things “destined to perish with use” (2:22)…All of our lives should be ruled by Christ. Every thought, aim, value, aspiration, and striving should come under his lordship. Garland, D. E. (1998). Colossians and Philemon (p. 201-202). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House. They are sitting on the greatest support update.

“ In Christ, you are. Seek him, you must. If Yoda wrote the book of Colossians

“ The Christian life is a process in which, through constant fellowship with the risen Christ and through the operation of his Spirit, the believer is transformed into his likeness, from one stage of glory to another (2 Cor. 3:18).” G.B. Caird, Paul’s Letters from Prison

Colossians 3:5-11 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12

“The Rooted Life: Time to Go Hunting” Today’s Message: “The Rooted Life: Time to Go Hunting” 1. Put to Death 13

“ But this “putting to death” of sin is not only demanded by our incorporation into Christ; it is also empowered and effected by it. Union with Christ, because it puts us in a new relationship to sin and brings us into the sphere of the Spirit’s power, will impact the way we live. Ultimately, then, the imperative “put to death” in this verse must be viewed as a call to respond to, and cooperate with, the transformative power that is already operative within us. ~ Moo, D. J. (2008). (p. 255). Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans Pub. Co.

Romans 6:1-6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 16

“ The believer is dead to the world with Christ (Chs. 2:20; 3:3), having put off the “flesh” in Him (Chs. 2:11; 3:9) and been liberated from sin (Rom. 6:6f., 11, 18, 22); on the other hand he is still in the world, with his old “flesh”, exposed to the temptations of sin. Hence this antinomy in the apostle’s thought-world; hence his transition back and forth between the indicative and imperative: “Be what you are!”49 ~ Simpson, E. K., & Bruce, F. F. (1957). (p. 269). Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

2. What’s Paul not saying

“ “Reckon as dead things those ‘members’ of yours which partake of the nature of the old earthly life.” Paul is not talking here of the actual members of the human body, nor is he expressing himself in quite the same sense as Jesus intends where He says that the offending hand or foot should be cut off, or the offending eye plucked out, if entrance into life cannot otherwise be gained (Matt. 5:29f.; 18:8f.; Mark 9:43ff.). ~ Simpson, E. K., & Bruce, F. F. (1957). (p. 267). Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

3. What am I to be killing?

“ Vice lists in the New Testament often conclude with a reminder that God will judge the kind of conduct outlined in the list (e.g., Gal. 5:19–21; 1 Cor. 6:10–11; Eph. 5:3–6). They differ in this respect from their counterparts in the larger Greek world, which were concerned simply to foster moral improvement. In the New Testament, in contrast, the vice lists function to depict the lifestyle of people who are in enmity with the holy God of the Bible and who thus suffer eternal condemnation. The “vices” are therefore elevated to a whole new level of seriousness. The warning of judgment in this verse therefore underscores the need to take seriously the exhortation that Christians do away with such conduct.

“ Putting to death sins like those mentioned in v. 5 is vital because God will visit with his wrath those who continue to practice them. And putting to death sins like these is possible (even “natural”) because God has given his people, through his Spirit, a new power to conform their conduct to God’s holy demands. ~Moo, D. J. (2008). (p. 258). Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. .

4. How do we kill it?

5. What else do we need to kill?

6. Christ is all, and is in all
