EFAInfo Overview Developed to support the EFA Mid-Decade Assessment. Reflects in its structure the set of MDA indicators – both core and policy/system indicators Represents strong and positive collaboration between agencies – particularly UNESCO and UNICEF Prepared for CDROM release in October 2008 and online from UNICEF EAPRO from January 2009.

Objectives at 2 levels Country-level Provide a tool and template for national customization and implementation to compile, monitor, present and analyze education data National activities underway with support from UNICEF EAPRO in: Indonesia Mongolia Papua New Guinea Vanuatu Further country activities are expected through support from national DevInfo taskforce and UNICEF Country Offices

Objectives at 2 levels Regional Develop a regional database as record of the Asia and Pacific EFA MDA integrated with education-related, national and sub-national data. Coverage includes: Central Asia South Asia East Asia South-East Asia Pacific ASPBAE has adopted the tool for use with regional and national EdWatch across the region.

A commitment and an opportunity in Asia and the Pacific EFAInfo Data Analysis Graphs, tables and maps presented here were prepared with data from the EFAInfo 1.2. Compiled data includes national and sub-national data sets prepared for the EFA Mid-Decade Assessment, household survey data and internationally-comparable data from the EFA GMR and SOWC 2008

Household Surveys: Economic status has great impact on education attainment, but other factors contribute to depth of disparities Education Attainment by wealth Source: National DHS/TLSS/MICS Reports

Household Surveys: The urban/rural divide affects boys and girls participation and attainment of education differently across the region. Education Attainment by sex and location (urban/rural) Source: National DHS/MICS Reports

MICS3: Economic Security impacts School Attendance for both boys and girls Unlike Primary Education, where school attendance is fairly consistent across wealth quintile, Secondary School participation increases consistently with wealth. Source: National MICS Reports

A Common Database System features Contains EFA MDA indicators, ready for customization, data entry and use Compiles all relevant data in one system, allowing for multiple sources of data Facilitates easy retrieval of data Provides for analysis of trends over time Integrates powerful presentation tools (table, graph, map) The functions of this Database Management System are derived from the objectives of those who conceived this software: All data available in a given country compiled in one system only: DevInfo provides a database solution for dissemination of statistics on one common platform. Often in a country, data is scattered among different institutions using different software and sometimes with different figures for a same indicator. In other words, the idea is not to re-invent the wheel but just to put all existing data together and to have this data speak the same language for easier comparison/linkage. DevInfo still supports multiple data sources which means that the user has the opportunity to compare different figures for a same indicator coming from various sources and choose among these sources based on information provided in information sheets. Easy retrieval of data: The Wizards integrated in the system help Users to quickly produce tables, graphs and maps. This way, users would spend less time retrieving data and preparing presentations and have more time to actually analyze the data and disseminate it through reports and presentations. Because the same system compiles all the data of a country or a region, this facilitates - the analysis of trends (data values over a number of years), the analysis of data relationships (you can put together indicators from different sectors), and, it also allows analysis at national and sub-national level (since the system supports data at sub-national level - up to 8 sub-national levels). It also allows cross-country analysis. So this Database Management System overall improves the quality of analysis of socio-economic indicators. This helps decision-making in terms of planning, monitoring and evaluation. This tool allows to have a better situation analysis according to which decision-makers will opt for this or that action to improve the development situation of the country. They will also be able to focus on priority areas for intervention. A Common Database System features
