General Guidelines Cost containment pressures on corporate legal departments and law firms have encouraged in house departments to get creative with staffing. When retaining or directing a non‐lawyer outside the firm, a lawyer should communicate directions appropriate under the circumstances to give reasonable assurance that the non‐lawyer's conduct is compatible with the professional obligations of the lawyer.
