Duolingo Integration and ETS MyPortal bit.ly/nercomp_slate17
What is Duolingo English Test? Duolingo is a language-learning app that launched an English test platform It tests reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking Drop-down menus, fill-in-the-blanks, audio and visual prompts Took the test myself, surprisingly hard.
The Set-Up Contact Duolingo and they will set up an account for you Follow Slate’s documentation for receiving Duolingo scores https://technolutions.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/226087147-Duolingo-Integration It will take an expert user about two hours or less to configure Embed URL field needs to be set to “Unsafe” This will allow the video to transfer when you merge a test record with an applicant record. Score feeds into Slate are automatic
Implementation at the GSD Duolingo for all those that already graduated from US undergrad Alternative to Skype interviews Utilized Duolingo for post-admission English class waiver
Benefits Streamlined our TOEFL waiver policy Cheaper than TOEFL, and rapid results Automated data-feeds Many ways of reviewing results: Reader Duolingo dashboard Link for interview You can buy credits to give to applicants If you have an initiative to increase representation from certain regions of the world, but you know the cost would be a barrier, this is a solution Very responsive Program Manager Unlike ETS
Drawbacks No anonymous reviewing We need to be vigilant of our implicit biases The current platform does not have a feature that masks the identity of the test taker Sometimes a weak internet connection in China will delay or invalidate results, though Duolingo claims they have optimized the website for Chinese firewall issues No sub-scores This made it difficult to determine why a test taker received a particular result Case of someone getting a 68 had better English skills than someone with a 92, in our opinion We weren’t sure why some test takers were having dramatic score jumps on subsequent tests No on-demand score results, unlike GRE and TOEFL
Conclusion Another tool in our quiver for English verification It is not ready to replace TOEFL/IELTS outright Can add value to your review process with strategic implementation
