A Deluge of Data The Rise of the Big Data World Technology has evolved to collect data on almost everything Energy data part of the flood - enabled by new meter technology Energy Data in Electronic Form Enables Measurement (particularly at source and neighbourhood) Accountability (particularly at program level) Innovation Driven by needs for energy savings, lower carbon economy/climate change

Uses & Users of Energy Data Utilities to: Manage systems including billing, reliability and remote connects Efficiency Programmers to: Design and implement programs as well as report on outcomes and demonstrate achievements Customers and Building Owners to: Review & manage/reduce (manual or automated) energy use  Share with others who review & manage energy use for customers Actors outside a utility customer relationship: Governments to model performance and monitor trends Researchers to discover relationships and trends Communities for energy planning (Smart Energy Communities) Commercial entities (e.g. marketers)

Formal Project Objectives Undertake an analysis of Energy and greenhouse gas emissions, Consumption methodologies, and Techniques, including for the cross-provincial attribution of energy consumption, within Atlantic Canada. Initiate a process to close energy and GHG emissions data gaps in Atlantic Canada. Provide recommendations on how to improve the availability, identification, and accuracy of the measurement of GHG emissions. Support public policy development, program, design, research advances, and new technology and business opportunities in Atlantic Canada.

Key Project Outcomes A clear statement of: An overview of: The sources of energy consumption and GHG emissions data in Atlantic Canada, The current ease of access, and The potential for new sources of technologies and public policies change. An overview of: How some other jurisdictions are collecting energy consumption data and How that data is being shared and under what protocols. Identify and evaluate the benefits, opportunities and barriers to more open availability of energy consumption data. A description of the methods to advance the opportunities, overcome the barriers and achieve the benefits of providing access to energy consumption data.
