The canoeists each use a paddle with a single blade. History: “Canoes were developed over the course of thousands of years by the native peoples of North America. The word ‘canoe’ originated from the word “kenu”, meaning dugout. These seagoing boats were used by the Carib Indians of the Caribbean islands, and were made of large tree trunks which were shaped and hollowed, and were strong enough to travel between the islands. North American Indians are responsible for creating the more well-known version of the canoe – a frame of wooden ribs covered with the lightweight bark of birch trees, and sometimes elm or cedar trees. These boats, which have remained virtually unchanged in design for thousands of years, proved to be ideal for travelling the numerous streams, rivers and lakes of North America. (Source: http://www.canoe.ca/AllAboutCanoes/) 2-A SEADOO is a personal watercraft used for the pleasure of going fast. Maximum 2 people. 3-A SEA KAYAK is a closed decked vessel, is generally meant for the use of one person and is propelled by a single paddle with a blade at either end and is part of the canoe family. (Source: http://www.canoe.ca/AllAboutCanoes/) 4-A zodiac 5-A HOVER BOAT is an air-cushion vehicle or ACV, capable of travelling over land, water, mud or ice and other surfaces. 2-seadoo 4-zodiac 5-hover boat

BIGGER BOATS 1-yacht 2-catamaran 3-sailboat 4-marine vessel Auto correct yourself 1-yacht 2-catamaran Instructions: Teacher says: “Now auto correct yourself.” Teacher can ask “Do you know what is the purpose of each boat?” 1-YACHT “is a recreational boat or ship. The term originates from the Dutch word jacht “hunt”, and was originally defined as a light fast sailing vessel used by the Dutch navy to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries. Modern use of the term designates two different classes of watercraft, sailing and power boats.” (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yacht) 2-CATAMARAN is a multi-hulled watercraft featuring two parallel hulls of equal size. They range in size. The structure connecting a catamaran’s two hulls ranges from a simple frame strung with webbing to support the crew to a bridging superstructure incorporating extensive cabin and/or cargo space. 3-SAILBOAT or SAILING BOAT is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails smaller than a sailing ship. 4-MARINE VESSEL is used for transportation of merchandise on water. 3-sailboat 4-marine vessel

5 essential rules to remember while boating “Have you ever been on a boat? What kind?” “What can you do to be safe on boats?” “What did you do to stay safe while on a boat?”

Rule 1: Always boat with an adult Who did you choose as your buddy? Explain why he or she is a good choice.

Rule 2: Always wear a life jacket or PFD Teacher provides a copy of that slide to each student

Life jacket inspection What are the key points highlighted in this video? CLICK HERE TO WATCH VIDEO Lifejacket Inspection (1:04)

Rule 2: Always wear a life jacket or PFD Activity: Draw a line that connects the proper life jacket to the right individual Standard type life jacket Teacher provides a copy of that slide to each student Inflatable life jacket

Rule 2: Always wear a life jacket or PFD Answers: auto correct yourself Standard type life jacket Teacher provides a copy of that slide to each student Students auto correct themselves and teacher explains the purpose of each life jacket. For example, the standard type life jacket will turn you on your back to keep your face out of the water, even if you are unconscious. (Source: https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/debs-obs-equipment-lifejackets-information-1324.htm) The life jacket that supports the head out of the water would be given to children. (Source: https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/debs-obs-equipment-lifejackets-information-1324.htm) The inflatable life jacket would be given to an adult who knows how to inflate it in case of emergency. The dog jacket ….it’s obvious Inflatable life jacket

Why is this the best life jacket? Because it keeps your head out of the water in case you lose consciousness

Rule 3: Always take the essentials Write down the name of each item on the line beside it “Write down the name of each item on the line beside it Teacher provides a copy of that slide to each student

Rule 4: Get Trained! Be prepared for emergencies Draw yourself beside an overturned boat Draw yourself doing that Activity: Draw what it says besides each square. For example 1. ”Stay with your boat” - draw yourself beside your boat if your boat has overturned.” 2. “Call for help or blow whistle” – draw yourself doing that 3. “Wait for help to come” – draw yourself doing that; draw everything, the surrounding environment: the water, the boat, the quay, the equipment, the radio that was used to call, your parents, other adults present, the sky, the shore, other boats if there are any around. Create the whole scenario. Draw yourself waiting for help to come with the surrounding environment, people, boat, equipment

Rule 5: Always make a Trip Plan “Think about a boating trip that you have been on before or may go on in the future. What were the 5Ws?”

Let’s sing together What would you do if you fall off the boat? Best answer is: stay close to the boat and blow whistle. Each life jacket has a whistle Which life jacket would you wear? Why? Answer: The life jacket that supports my head out of the water, that has a cushion at the back of my head if I lose consciousness.
