Recommendations from the 2013 Committee on Human Powered Boating Safety

Purpose Started as: Convene stakeholders to identify strategies to reduce paddle sport related accidents and fatalities. Evolved to: “Find opportunities to grow paddle sports while simultaneously growing a culture of safety so that, over time, the rate of accidents declines.” Exclusively focused on safety issues Prompted by fatality trend observed by State Parks

Process Review of 25 investigations ~ 5 lbs of paper Conclusions/Recommendations See handout for detailed description Four “types” of boaters involved in fatalities Focus on “Casual” Recommendations in four areas: Model local ordinance for mandatory PFD Wear K-12 education strategy Signage Data & Metrics
