Making a basic granny square Hooked on Crochet Making a basic granny square

Step 1: Holding the hook and yarn

Step 1 cont..:

Step 2: Making a slip knot

Step 3: Making a chain

Step 4: Slip stitch (sl st) to form a ring Insert the crochet hook through the first chain you made which is next to the slip knot Yarn over the hook and draw the yarn through the chain and through the loop on hook; you have now joined the chains into a ring

Work each round anti-clockwise Step 5: Round 1 Work each round anti-clockwise ch 3: Chain 3 (counts as 1st treble crochet) 2 tr: 2 treble crochets into the centre of the ring Treble crochet (tr) Wrap yarn round hook once, insert hook through middle of ring. You will have three loops on the hook. Wrap yarn round hook once, pull hook and yarn through 2 loops only. You will now have two loops on the hook. Wrap yarn around hook again, pull hook and yarn through remaining 2 loops.

Step 6: Round 2 If changing colour, fasten off and join new colour to any 2 chain space (ch sp) with a slip stitch (sl st) Fasten off Form slip knot with new colour Insert hook into chain 2 space, yarn over and slip stitch to join If continuing with the same colour, slip stitch (sl st) along to next 2 chain space
